2014 Christmas Cards – part 2

Part two of the Christmas sessions picks up with another Morris family. This one with three energetic children and a puppy! It was tough getting a posed picture so we went with the candids at the park so the kids could enjoy the wide, open spaces and I enjoyed getting a work-out running around them clicking away! Luckily for a Christmas card, you only need one or two great photos to send out and that’s really all we strived to get! Nichole warned me that photographing her family was going to be difficult but with a little bit of patience we managed to make it work!

Ralph’s presence was requested again for my next rustic, country-inspired family session with the Caseys. Ralph is straight out of 1950 so driving him in him scares me! My husband wasn’t around to bring him to the park again so I found the courage to crank him up and drive him over to an empty wooded plot of land right next to my house. I had no idea it was actually such a great backdrop over there!

The Casey family came to my house to start the session with the truck and then we went over to the park where we could take advantage of other country backdrops like old wooden fences, big field of tall grass and of course, that great enchanted forest! (You should really see this place after an ice storm, then you’ll know why I call it ‘enchanted’!) The day was beautiful and the sun created gorgeous lighting for this beautiful family! Take a look!

The Johnson family was the second of six sessions that I had in this one particular week of December. I did their pictures for last Christmas and their boys have grown so much in one year! I could not get over it, not to mention how adorable their youngest boy was! How was this the same little baby I saw last year?? I don’t think I’ve ever fallen in love with a little boy’s smile like his. Look for yourself – you may just want to eat him up!

When I pulled into the parking lot before the Bennett’s family photo shoot I got so excited because of what I saw. They had an old red wagon and lots of Christmas decorations and the little elf inside of me couldn’t wait to get started! But waiting it what we had to do because in my Christmas joy, I accidentally locked my camera with my only set of keys in my car. YAY! And the Bennett family practically drove up from Florida just to do this session with me. Double YAY! In between frantic calls to my husband who was 45 minutes away with family, I tried to miraculously unlock my car with my keypad entry that hadn’t been programmed (I was hoping the previous owner had an easy pin code that was still usable!) and Anna tried using maybe a pocket knife of some sort to unlock my door. Finally, my husband was able to call a friend who just happened to be on the same street as us, with the means of safely breaking into my car. It seemed hopeless but after a 30 minute delay we were finally back on schedule! YAY!

Lesson learned; get a spare key and program my keypad! But it was worth the wait because as always we got some really cute family pictures for Christmas cards and had time for other sessions which will be blogged about in a separate post!

Nate Turns One!

This year has gone by way too fast. It can’t possibly have already been 365 days since little Nathaniel was born, could it?! It feels like just a couple months ago he was still a little blob, not able to sit up on his own and now, at one year old he’s not just walking, he’s running around! Completely smitten with his new super power of cruising around on his own. I can’t imagine how Atlanta and Jake feel, knowing their baby is now a grown man toddler!

Well, we all knew that this cake smash session was going to be epic, because Nate has been enjoying sweets and “grown up” food for months now, always trying to grab handfuls of food off of everyone’s plates. Atlanta came fully prepared with awesome outfits, the cutest backdrop I’ve ever had and the wonderful idea of pictures of him washing off in a galvanized tub afterwards. I loved everything about this photo session, (minus the 1,294 bug bites we all got) including his big sister Sadie getting in on the cake-eating action! Enjoy Nate’s first birthday cake smash session! 🙂

Barfoot Maternity

My latest session and newest Coastie family (to be), the Barfoots did their session when Sonja was TEN DAYS from her due date! I’ve photographed a couple at 36 weeks, but never within DAYS of their due date! We picked a date on a weekend that just happened to have some extreme weather coming but obviously we had no choice but to keep it to that weekend, just in case! The day started out nice and warm and just 15 minutes before the session I was outside in a t-shirt. By the time I drove to the beach, the weather had turned from warm and sunny to cloudy, windy, and FREEZING cold! None of us were prepared for this, not to mention the wind on the beach was a little insane. We snapped a few pictures anyways but decided to try again the next day. That Saturday turned out to be even colder but at least the sun was out, so we met at a non-beach location hoping that would help with the wind. Sonja and her husband Scott were troopers to work through the cold without jackets on or gloves! Lord knows my fingers were frozen and I had gloves!

Fast forward a little bit, and I find out that Sonja and Scott delivered their baby girl the very next day on Sunday evening! Talk about great timing! Want to hear something else crazy? She told me afterwards that her water broke 30 minutes before our session on Saturday! And they didn’t tell me!! I even joked with them during the session that it was so close, she could have gone into labor before we could try session #2. They must have looked at each other smiling without me noticing! (Can you tell I’m still in shock?)

Anyways, I’m so happy for you both and wish you the best on this new adventure! If you can endure a photo session partially in labor, you can do anything! 😉 Enjoy!

Harley kids

After having to reschedule for a few weeks due to weather (I swear it’s worse than New England!) I met with the Harley family, minus the hubby, on Fort Fisher, NC. I love being able to explore all new areas of this place! Just a short ferry ride over the Intracoastal Waterway, four miles from Southport is a beautiful little spot that boasts a beautiful ocean and some REALLY awesome “twisty trees”. At least, that’s what we’re calling them because the mom and I have no idea what type of tree they are. I’m sure my husband could tell me as he knows pretty much everything.

The goal for this shoot was to get some cute pictures for Christmas cards so I brought along some candy canes- fresh from Santa in the North Pole, of course. These were the “if you’re good!” enticement to get some cooperation with the kiddos but like most young children and goofy siblings, this was a hard task. Is Karma coming back to me? When I was younger and my mom tried taking pictures of us kids or as a family it took for.ev.er. to get us to simmer down and pose nicely. Now I know what she went through! But I also know what the kids are going through. And I’ve found that it’s best to just let them be and try to capture them the best I can! Besides, looking back on my family pictures, I can honestly say that they fully represent us and the same will be for any family!
