Barfoot Maternity

My latest session and newest Coastie family (to be), the Barfoots did their session when Sonja was TEN DAYS from her due date! I’ve photographed a couple at 36 weeks, but never within DAYS of their due date! We picked a date on a weekend that just happened to have some extreme weather coming but obviously we had no choice but to keep it to that weekend, just in case! The day started out nice and warm and just 15 minutes before the session I was outside in a t-shirt. By the time I drove to the beach, the weather had turned from warm and sunny to cloudy, windy, and FREEZING cold! None of us were prepared for this, not to mention the wind on the beach was a little insane. We snapped a few pictures anyways but decided to try again the next day. That Saturday turned out to be even colder but at least the sun was out, so we met at a non-beach location hoping that would help with the wind. Sonja and her husband Scott were troopers to work through the cold without jackets on or gloves! Lord knows my fingers were frozen and I had gloves!

Fast forward a little bit, and I find out that Sonja and Scott delivered their baby girl the very next day on Sunday evening! Talk about great timing! Want to hear something else crazy? She told me afterwards that her water broke 30 minutes before our session on Saturday! And they didn’t tell me!! I even joked with them during the session that it was so close, she could have gone into labor before we could try session #2. They must have looked at each other smiling without me noticing! (Can you tell I’m still in shock?)

Anyways, I’m so happy for you both and wish you the best on this new adventure! If you can endure a photo session partially in labor, you can do anything! 😉 Enjoy!

The Lake Family

I met this family real soon after moving here to Southport. Jeremy works with my husband at the Oak Island CG station and we had a big cookout once we were all settled in. Over the summer our husbands played in a softball league (still trying to forget the embarrassment of that season!) and Alexis and I grew really close during those evenings. During the games we talked the whole time, made fun of our husbands a little bit, and I realized that we were basically meant to be. One day while out to lunch Alexis informed me that her and Jeremy were expecting their second child! So, naturally, I jumped at the idea of a photo shoot with them so they could have some cute pictures to announce that they were pregnant. Little did I know that once I posted those pictures they would go viral! I think that last time I checked, their announcement had over 80 “likes” and had been seen by over 3,500 people! 3,500 people!!!!

So here is the Lake family at Fort Anderson/Brunswick Town and towards the end are a whole slew of ways we posed for an announcement! Love you guys!!!

Nate

Here’s Nate’s newborn photos! He was such an awesome little dude throughout his whole session! He endured pictures in his nursery, outside on their screened patio, then to Wrightsville Beach, all without ever crying! He even slept through our time afterwards eating pizza at a local joint outside on a busy road! He only slept for the last bit of the evening but we made sure to get all the shots we wanted with him! Including an “after” shot from Atlanta’s maternity session on their privately owned dock!

Nathaniel’s Debut to the World

There’s a whole new fad of photography out there for capturing the births of newborn babies. I hadn’t thought much about it, especially since with offering that kind of photography, you really need to be available at any time! However, with my sister-in-law and her husband expecting their first child just after we moved down here, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to try out this new gig and also document a very special time in these new parents’ lives!

Nate came to the world a happy and healthy 7lbs 12oz. My guess was 8lbs, 4 oz!

I wasn’t able to document the actual birth (a C-section isn’t very interesting anyways) but I was there starting with the grandparents seeing and holding their first grand baby for the first time. That Thursday was such an exciting and special day for our family. Welcome to the world, little Nate-boo! 🙂

The Anderson Family

Presenting my latest Coast Guard family with the cutest blonde hair-blue eyed baby girl I’ve ever seen! I met the Andersons at the Wilmington River Walk where the CG cutter Diligence is moored up. Erin wanted family pictures done before her husband, who works on the Diligence, went underway for a few months.

Their daughter who is just over two years old is at that stage where she just wants to go-go-go, all on her own so it was a bit tricky getting pictures done here! We tried all kinds of ways to distract her to keep her happy in one spot. One of those times though it ended with her falling and splitting open a previous cut on her knee. This ultimately meant the end of our shoot but luckily we were nearing the end anyways. We weren’t able to take our time and get portraits in front of the CG cutter but we tried a few quick ones before packing up!

Through it all, her cute little grin makes all the pictures so great and wonderful!

Gabriel

This is my favorite newborn shoot thus far because not only was this little dude SO cute, but he actually stayed asleep for almost the whole time! He was so precious and little and awesome and perfect… there was a moment where I wanted to take him home with me! This shoot was also my favorite because the parents actually wanted to be in the pictures and I got some heart-warming shots of them with their new bundle of joy. They were open to all kinds of poses which was great because I was FINALLY able to get the “head on the hands” pose. Which actually isn’t a pose at all.

For those who don’t know, to get that kind of “pose” I actually have to edit two separate pictures and combine them into one. One picture is of the parents holding the baby’s head so I can have a picture of the arms. And the second picture is of them holding from below so I can have a head to use. It’s a little tricky and this was my very first time attempting this shot so I’m pretty proud of the way that it came out!

Wolfe Maternity : Lincoln, RI

The beautiful pregnant lady in these pictures is the sister of another maternity shoot client that I had back in December. (Does that even make sense??) Must be awesome to be pregnant at the same time as your sister! This couple was so much fun to work with and their dog Grizzly became best friends with my dog, Bear! It’s like it was fate that I was supposed to photograph them because our dogs’ names fit perfectly! These parents are due just in time for Mother’s Day so we’ll find out in a few weeks whether it’s a girl or boy!

Toy Maternity : Sandwich, MA

This Coastie couple are expecting their first child this spring; a baby boy to start their new journey as a family! We met at Dexter’s Grist Mill in Sandwich, MA on what was supposed to be a warm(ish), sunny day but turned out to be cloudy and very cold! But they didn’t let it bother them and they braved the entire shoot without jackets on while I shivered in my North Face! Here’s to warmer weather for when baby Jackson is born!

I’m trying out my new editing software that my husband bought me as a surprise gift so take a look at my “new look”!

The Giguere Family : Glastonbury, CT

Behold; the first members of my family to have their pictures taken with me as k.ariel photography! I was so excited to be able to photograph my brother, sister-in-law and adorable nephew because I know how fun and photogenic they are! Only one problem arose: this shoot was in November and my brother was participating in “movember”- a full month of not shaving your facial hair for men to raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancer. While I appreciate the support he has given, it did not make for easy editing to make him have his normal facial hair back! Thanks bro!

Matt and Stephanie : married 7.14.12 : Sturbridge, MA

This was the second wedding that I photographed with Heritage Photography at the Publick House in Sturbridge, MA. I loved everything about this venue. The old, historic buildings added a nice rustic charm, while the gardens and tented reception offered a more casual but romantic touch. Matt is a family friend (he was the best man in my brother’s wedding!) so it was a family affair for the Giguere family! My brother and sister were part of the wedding party and my mother and I photographed their amazing wedding day!
